whenever I let myself fall into the music
in unstructured steps
on the edge of balance
moving freely, without thought
as my arms hang for a moment
inertia-laden
before following in river-stream flow
as I turn with haphazard intent
and a smile on my face
slipping into the seams of rhythms
which tumble me around as waves
surfacing briefly on the edge of a footstep
before descending into a lazy pirouette
breathing in shapes and phrases of steps
until my eyes open, returning to rest
I think of you
late night, drunken smiles
our bodies tracing eccentric orbits
spiralling into a kiss
in the rhythm of the music swirling around us
swept into shared melody
then, as we pull ourselves apart
we’re stung by a static spark.
left with its remnants, a fading mark
we pretend in laughs it went unfelt.
